Big Bird

Growing up suburban, there were, and probably still are, a variety of fauna I've never come in contact with. Since moving to Texas I've made the acquaintance of a couple more. Last week, as a matter of fact, one of them crossed my path and reminded me of my first experience with the species.
While our house was being constructed, Chris and I would visit it on the weekend to check progress. On one of those visits, no sooner had I gone out the front door by myself, that the largest bird I've ever seen raced by me road-runner-like at break-neck speed. I did my version of break-neck, sans the speed, back into the house to call our builder to alert him of my momentous discovery: a pterodactyl.
He was as kind as someone could be when he gently broke the news to me that I had seen a wild turkey. He said "What's wrong with you, girl. Haven't you ever seen a wild turkey before?" How would I know from wild turkey. The only kind of turkey I've ever seen is pasty white, covered in plastic and has a red pop-up thermometer in it's butt. And the only time I’ve ever seen any kind of turkey move that fast is when it slid off my plate. Boy, who's the turkey now?
