Almost Ohio Stars
|
By Jane Hardy Miller
Use quick piecing methods to construct either size of this modified version of the traditional Ohio Star block. Quilters who hate to waste fabric will be happy to know that the points for the smaller stars are made from the leftovers of the larger ones. Fabric requirements are for fat quarters, but the blocks can also be made from scraps or yardage.
Quilt Size: 60” x 80” without borders
Non-directional fabrics work best.
Fabric Requirements - From Fat Quarters:
Backgrounds*: 24 light fat quarters, about half neutrals (grays, tans & taupes) and half pale pastels
Stars: 12 neutral dark fat quarters (browns, blacks and combinations, or prints with brown or black backgrounds) AND 12 brightly-colored dark fat quarters (reds, oranges, golds, purples and greens).
OR
Fabric Requirements - From Yardage:
Backgrounds*: 2 3/4 yards light
Stars: 1/4 yard
OR
1 fat quarter for each 2 blocks; for example, for the 48 blocks, you will need 24 quarter yard pieces. (These pieces may also be cut from large scraps, at least 6 ½" x 32").
Inner border: 3/8 yard
Outer border: 1 3/8 yards, cut crosswise
or 2 1/2 yards, cut lengthwise
Back: 5 1/2 yards, pieced lengthwise
Binding: 5/8 yard
* Using one background fabric will give the quilt a calmer feel; using fat quarters or scraps will make
the quilt more exciting.
